Superb Barbados Accommodation In A Guesthouse

May 10th, 2008 AndrewWatkins Posted in Travel | No Comments »

Why not check out a very special Guesthouse in Barbados for your vacation instead of an expensive and often impersonal and overrated hotel.

We started looking for a cheap hotel in Barbados and ended up in the most fabulous guesthouse called

Sea-U Guesthouse on the east coast of the island in Tent Bay, St Joseph, Bathsheba.

If you haven’t heard of Bathsheba then it is your loss, because this is half way up the unspoiled eastern coast of Barbados, and well off the tourist hotspots in the south and west of Barbados.

If you choose the Sea-U Guesthouse for your Barbados Accommodation what will it be like?

A good description would be a Tropical Gem with beautiful tropical gardens and an amazing view of the Atlantic Ocean. A wonderful peaceful Caribbean Inn is another description. The most apt comment by a leaving guest is to describe the whole experience at the Sea U Guesthouse, as a little piece of paradise.

The rooms whilst simple and clean have great views and a couple of them even have their own hammock, with at least six hammocks between the palm trees in the garden. One of the great joys is no TV, clocks, radio, or Internet, so you can relax in a hammock, listen to the waves crashing on the rocks, and enjoy the novel you have been meaning to read all year. Note the windows have no glass which does mean you can be lulled to sleep secure in your mosquito net, but aware sometimes of other guests chatting on the porch outside.

Apart from the rooms which are part of the main house there are three small chalet style apartments in the garden, each with a kitchenette.

The beach at Bathsheba is easily accessible, Bathsheba is beautiful, and almost tourist free, and you can walk for miles on the beach, which of course faces the Atlantic, there are a lot of rocks, fearsome breaking waves, so not very suitable for swimming. The scenery here is best described as ruggedly beautiful, but if you want to see the island, and visit the more touristy beaches, then a four wheel drive would be sensible, although some folks got around very well in a sort of mini moke beach buggy type large golf cart. Sea U Guesthouse is actually a great base for exploring barbados

This is an Inn that leans heavily on the charm and helpfulness of the owner Uschi and his staff, who make your stay like being part of a large international family, with very high quality service. One of the charms of the Sea U Guesthouse is it attracts people from all corners of the world. They all tend to be like minded people, who don’t want a plastic sanitized Barbados, but want to feel part of the community. You will hear many languages spoken, and there are strong friendships made.

A Bajan Breakfast and a three courseDinner are served from the Garden Restaurant, and are both well priced, and absolutely delicious, and the real taste of Barbados, served in a relaxed and convivial atmosphere overlooking the Ocean. Booking are required for dinner, because the evening meal only happens if there are sufficient bookings. The slight drawback is the lack of restaurants in the immediate area, but to be fair the south and west coast centres are less than an hour’s drive.

The Sea U Guest House is a real Bajan style home from home, which offers a superb alternative to what can sometimes be a less than satisfactory cheap hotel in Barbados. This is the genuine article, absolutely loved by its guests, a quiet retreat, the perfect genuine Barbados accommodation.

Light: One of the most important thing, as you require taking into account while purchasing a nose hair trimmer is ‘light’. Looking for a device that is designed with in-built LED lights is best option. Such kind of nose vacuum hair trimmer allows a person to see and observe better at the time of removing hair.

There are some designed nose hair trimmers available in market that is equipped with rotating or oscillating blades that run by powered batteries. Whereas, other nose hair trimmers need to rotate its blades manually by rotating trimmer’s handle to trim or remove the hair from nose. While blades get rotate in other designed trimmer is by simply squeezing their handles.

Kenya Travel - How To Spend You Time In Nairobi If You Miss Your International Connecting Flight

May 10th, 2008 SolomonOkila Posted in Travel | No Comments »

Besides losing out on the all-important deal, the business travellers’ worst nightmare is probably the possibility of missing the next flight – for whatever reason.

No matter how well-prepared you may think you are for this small inconvenience, it will still throw you off-balance. It may happen to you after being bumped from your seat by the airline or you could simply get caught up in the unpredictable traffic congestions of the city and end up being late for the check-in. Whichever way it comes to you, you will end up with a situation to deal with.

Your first reaction is of course what we all expect and accept, especially if you believe the fault is not yours – rage, annoyance, whining, shouting match with the duty manager etc.

After all the telephone calls have been made and you have explored all options, you realize you have 14 hours in your hands before you can get into the next flight for your destination. The next revelation that comes to you, is of course the fact that life must go on. At this point, you know you are fine.

From this moment, I advise that you put into use the lessons you learnt from one of the very many self-help books you have been carrying around to keep you busy in - between meetings. Hopefully, one of the lessons would be: “Look at the bright side of it, and it will be better”.

In other words, make a decision to use this time to enjoy some of the attractions and interesting places in and around Nairobi. Resist the temptation to book a hotel in Nairobi where you would spend the rest of the time feeling annoyed. Find out what you can do with this time!

Here are some options for day trips and excursions that can be done from Nairobi:

Tour of Nairobi City

If you are a first time traveller to Nairobi and have not had time to see the city, a 3 hour tour of the city will give you some ‘feel’ of this beautiful city in the sun. You get to see the central business district, viewing the shops, the city market, and the railway museum among other places. Normally this tour would end with a visit to the Snake Park and national museum that are just about 5-minutes drive from the city centre. Go for this option if have at least 8 hours between you and your next flight.

Tour of Nairobi City together with a visit to the Giraffe Centre and Karen Blixen.

If you have about 12 hours available to you before your next flight, you may wish to consider extending the city tour to cover the animal orphanage at the entrance of the Nairobi national park, the Giraffe centre and the Karen Blixen Museum. Or you could just skip the city tour and undertake the 4-hour tour covering Animal orphanage, Giraffe centre and Karen Blixen Museum.

The animal orphanage is run by Kenya Wildlife services. It lies just about 27 kilometres (approximately 16 miles) from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Unfortunately, the animals here are caged, and some people may not like this. But they are caged for a reason. Some were brought from the wilderness after losing parents to predators or poachers. Some were born at the orphanage while their parents are being taken care of. The Nairobi animal orphanage raises the orphaned animal with the aim of nurturing them and training them. Eventually, they are released back into the wild to lead a normal animal life!

The Giraffe Centre

The Giraffe Centre is an educational centre run by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (A.F.E.W). The story of the Giraffe Centre and its begin has been narrated many times. It was set up to protect the endangered Rothschild giraffe. If you lean towards conservation and fun, please consider visiting the centre. You will get the chance to feed the giraffe from a raised platform as you contribute towards conservation.

Karen Blixen Museum

You must have heard about the film ‘Out of Africa’. Yes, if you love history and antiques, you may consider a visit to the home Karen Blixen and step back in time for a few hours. Karen’s home is now preserved as a museum. The museum lies about 30 minutes drive from your starting point – the airport.

Nairobi National park

The Nairobi National park is enjoys the unique status of being the only protected wildlife area so close to a capital city – Nairobi. It located just 7 kilometres from the city centre that means about 27 kilometres from the Airport. The park is home to the rhino, buffalo, cheetah, zebra, giraffe, lion and plenty of antelopes and gazelles. You will need at least 8 hours to enjoy this tour. You will use 4 hours for the tour, keep 1 hour to use from on the road to and from the park, and 3 hours for your check-in!

Lake Nakuru National park

Lake Nakuru National is known world-wide for the flamingos. Besides the flamingos, there is an additional 450 of bird species. It is also a sanctuary for the white Rhino. Situated just about 3 hours from Nairobi, you can visit the park either as a day long excursion or overnight trip if you have the time. You must have at least 11 hours here.

Six hours will be spent on the road between Nairobi and Lake Nakuru; 5 hours for your game drive in the park and lunch break.

It is important that you do not miss your connecting flight again. So let us summarize this:

Pick the Tour of Nairobi City if you have at least 8 hours. Combine the City tour with Karen, Giraffe Centre and Karen Blixen if you can afford at least 12 hours.

If you would rather do the individual excursions of Giraffe Centre or Karen Blixen, keep at least 8 hours for each.

Lake Nakuru National will take up at least 12 hours.

How do you make these arrangements from the airport? Well, just look around while at the Jomo Kenyatta International airport. There are reliable tour operators with desks at the airport and they can arrange the tours as you wait. Of course if you have contacts of your preferred local travel agent, you could call them up to have this done.

This is not a word of caution, just advice: Whichever excursion you take up, whatever you do, please make sure at the end of everything, you still have 4 hours ‘buffer zone’ to get to the Jomo Kenyatta International airport from the City centre. Three hours for your check in and 1 hour just in case there is heavy traffic on the road.

Boost Cardiovascular Health And Circulation With Butcher’s Broom

May 9th, 2008 DarrellMiller Posted in Wellness, Fitness and Diet | No Comments »

Butcher’s broom (Ruscus aculeatus) is a member of the lily family, and looks a bit like a holly bush with barbed evergreen leaves and bright red berries in the fall. At one time they were collected, tied together and sold to butchers as brooms to sweep out their shops.

The stiff leaves were particularly suitable for cleaning out offal and other waste products from butchered animals and also for scrubbing butcher’s blocks. It was also used as a deterrent to rodents with their eyes on the meat! Alternative names are sweet broom, kneeholy and Jew’s myrtle, so named because it was used during the Feast of the Tabernacles as one of the ‘four species’ used in the lulav.

The herb was commonly used in Ancient Greece and Rome, the Greeks using it to reduce swellings of various kinds and the Romans using it to treat varicose veins. It has the same uses today, only the mechanisms are understood better. It has been used for centuries in the Mediterranean area for the treatment of inflammations and problems with the circulation, and the Romans used to mash up the leaves and berries to add to wine, and they also used the roots and rhizome as a medicine by soaking them in wine. Today, it is illegal to use holly as a decoration in Italy, so butcher’s broom is used instead.

All parts of the plant are used, including the rhizome, and although it is used as a diuretic, and to control a loss of blood pressure experience by some people on standing up, it is its effect on blood vessels where its main medical benefits lie. Butcher’s Broom can strengthen certain portions of blood vessels, and change the flexibility properties of the cell walls.

The result of this is that the vessels are tightened up, which helps to maintain the flow of blood throughout the body, but also renders the cell walls less likely to leak or crack under stress. The result is a reduction in blood leakage from stretched and weakened blood vessels such as those that result in hemorrhoids, and also of conditions caused by weakened valves in the veins such as varicose veins and spider veins.

The blood pressure in the veins is very weak since they are so far away from the heart, the blood having passed through the arteries, through the capillaries and into the veins on its way back to the heart before being pumped to the lungs. When the valves become weakened, particularly in the large veins in the leg, there is little to prevent the blood from coming under the influence of gravity and pooling back down the vein, causing distention and occasional ruptures.

A ruptured varicose vein can be very serious and cause significant blood loss. Weakened valves can also lead to the formation of blood clots, which is itself a very serious condition that eventually blocks the heart or causes a stroke. Not only can butcher’s broom strengthen the vein walls and prevent leakage, and also enable them to more easily resist the pressure that can cause them to rupture, but it can also be used to break down blood clots. In fact the herb is used in many European hospitals to prevent the formation of blood clots after surgery.

The active ingredients in the rhizome are saponins that contain the aglycones ruscogenin and neuroscogenin and the associated spirostanol and furostanol glycosides. The receptors that cause vasocontraction are known as adrenoreceptors, these receptors can be selectively stimulated by butcher’s broom extract to tighten the veins and improve the return of blood. When introduced intravenously, butcher’s broom was noted to constrict venules (small veins that feed the main veins but not arterioles (the small arteries than feed the capillaries). Hence blood vessels can be selectively treated, and the effect on isolated blood vessels was enhanced by heating. Many supplements include calcium that helps to strengthen the blood vessel walls.

It is possible, therefore, to target the blood vessels that require constrictive treatment in order that they are strong enough to return blood to the heart rather than leak or distend. However, that is not the only health benefit that butcher’s broom provides. It can also be used as a diuretic. It is not a strong diuretic, but is used to relief the swelling of bruises and PMS, the reason given being that since leakage from the blood vessels is lessened, then more fluid is available to pass through the kidneys. There might be other reasons.

It is also use for the treatment of ortho static hypotension, the reduction in blood pressure that some people experience. It is believed that butcher’s broom can control this condition without increasing blood pressure, as most other remedies do, and which is almost as undesirable as the condition they are treating.

There are few problems associated with the herb, although few studies have been carried out its use by pregnant women. Although the one test that was carried indicated no effect, it would be wise for pregnant or nursing women not to use it until further studies have been carried out. Due to its effect in tightening blood vessels, its use is not recommended by anybody suffering from high blood pressure (hypertension). Many hypertension treatments are designed to render the blood vessels more elastic rather than constrict them.

In one very small study of pregnant women who used a topical cream containing butcher’s broom, no side effects were seen for either the mother or the baby. However, very little information is available on how oral butcher’s broom might affect a developing fetus, an infant, or a small child. Therefore, its use is not recommended during pregnancy, while breast-feeding, or during early childhood.

Because it tightens blood vessels, butcher’s broom may worsen high blood pressure or benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). Individuals with either of these conditions should not use any form of butcher’s broom without first consulting a doctor. The known side effects have already been stated, and they are fairly mild, but few studies have been made on the herb other than in Europe, and the side effects have not been fully explored. It is unlikely; however, that there are any as yet unknown serious side effects since butcher’s broom has been used now for a long time, particularly in Europe.

The term ‘ruscogenin’ is used for the collective mixture of active saponins in butcher’s broom, and many of the supplements are formulated to include from 5 to 15 mg of these. However, check the label, since standardization is not yet required in the USA, and in theory a preparation can include much more or much less ruscogenin. It is frequently supplied with other active ingredients, such as vitamin C or calcium, and perhaps even horse chestnut that affect blood vessels in a similar way. Always follow the instructions on the package, since these are designed for the specific strength of supplement you are using.

Quick Fix - Chipping Fundamentals

May 9th, 2008 BradMyers Posted in Sports | No Comments »

As we all have had our troubles with chipping the golf ball, some golfers are literally scared to hit a chip shot. These players do not discriminate and have usually hit all of the bad shots that you can hit such as a “skull,” where the ball flies way over the green or a “chili dip,” where the golf ball will hardly move at all.

Luckily, no matter anybody’s past, you can become a confident chipper in a short amount of time with the correct fundamentals. With the correct fundamentals, anyone can start hitting chip shots like a pro in no time!

All amateurs can look like a pro prior to the golf shot as address and set up are the two areas that you can make sure that you have correct before you start the stroke.

In chipping, hand or wrist action is not wanted. With this being said, it is very important that you understand that you must have a flat left wrist and a bent right wrist at impact. The good news is that you can pre-set this position before you even swing the golf club. Take a golf club and place your golf grip on it. Just look at your hands until you understand how the position of your wrists looks and works. Once you can see as well as understand that you need a flat left wrist and a bent right wrist, you now want to take your address and setup position.

In the chipping address position, keep your shoulders square to the target line, narrow your stance and place the ball just behind the center of your stance. You will then lean your body and club shaft toward the target until you have 70 percent of your weight on the target side. By leaning the weight forward, you increase the angle of attack. This makes it virtually impossible to hit the chip shot fat!

Now it’s time to make the chipping stroke. We will be using a motion for this shot that is similar to our putting stroke. Simply move the club back until the butt end of the club reaches the middle of your right thigh. It is imperative that you do not shift your weight during the stroke. Your weight stays forward throughout the entire stroke. In addition, keep shaft leaning towards the target through impact. Once in the finish position, hold this position for a slow count of three. This will give you the time to check if your flat left wrist and a bent right wrist is still in tact.

After working with many levels of players who have had many chipping difficulties, these fundamentals have worked for many, many players. Using this chipping method in giving one on one lessons and in teaching many golf schools, I have seen the quickest turn-arounds for players of any handicap who are struggling with their chipping. Using these fundamentals, you will lose all fear of chipping. Who knows, you may even make a couple!

Short Game Books

May 9th, 2008 BradMyers Posted in Sports | No Comments »

Most golfers think that chipping and pitching close to the green are what makes up the short game. The short game articles provided at Wireless Golf Coach cover all aspects of chipping and pitching the golf ball and in addition, we will consider any shot within 100 yards of the hole as part of the short game.

By definition, chipping is a shot that has maximum airtime and minimum ground time. In other words, a chip is on the ground longer than it is in the air. You will want to place more weight on your target side to ensure a downward angle of attack. You will also have your hands farther forward to de-loft the clubface and this will you to hit the ball higher on the clubface and more inline with the center of gravity.

By definition, a pitch shot is a shot that has maximum air time and minimum ground time. In other words, it is in the air longer than it is on the ground. For this shot your weight will be more even at address and the handle or grip of the club will be more in line with the all at address as well as impact. You will want o make contact closer to the second or third grove to put the all up in the air. This will allow the center of gravity to help you get the ball up into the air.

Currently, the some of the best known teachers of the short game are Dave Pelz, Stan Utley and Rob Akin. Once a year, the golf magazine Golf Digest publishes its own Top 100 Teachers List in the US.

Dave Pelz uses his background as a NASA scientist. Pelz came to his theories after collecting endless data on putting, chipping and pitching. Dave Pelz has determined that the proper motion for a golf club is to go straight back and straight through. Dave Pelz has written three notable books which include Putt Like The Pros, The Short Game Bible and The Putting Bible.
